The films of Corinne and Arthur Cantrill have been in the Arsenal archive since 1982. Their keen interest in the relationship between landscape and film form led them to carry out research on the two- and three-color technique, creating works that are some of the most beautiful expressions of what the medium of film is capable of in crafting spaces of sensorial experience.

Waterfall

Like a lucid dream, the movements of the falling water in WATERFALL merge into a metaphorical space of constant change that moves beyond a mere depiction of the real.

The Second Journey (To Uluru)

Gently moving from a distant vantage point to the very heart of the monolith, THE SECOND JOURNEY (TO ULURU) reveals the magic of the most holy location of the Indigenous people in shimmering nuances of light. Detail and panorama shots of this over 500-million-year-old rock formation recorded at different times convey a feeling of hyper-temporality that also contains a sense of loss. In 2018, we acquired further works by the Cantrills and created a new 16mm print of WATERFALL – what a treasure! (ara)
